Unsound: A Cultural History of Music and Eugenics

My first book project, derived from my 2023 doctoral dissertation, examines the role of music in British and American eugenics movements in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Through new readings of scientific texts and original archival research, I show how eugenicists framed musical ability as the surest possible proof that complex social phenomena could in fact be reduced to heredity—and thus, manipulated through selective breeding.
